For Children with Incurable Diseases

Let us pray that children suffering from incurable diseases, along with their families, may receive the medical care and compassionate support they need, and that they may be sustained in strength and hope.

What is Lent?

Lent is a 40 day season of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that begins on Ash Wednesday and ends at sundown on Holy Thursday. It's a period of preparation to celebrate the Lord's Resurrection at Easter. During Lent, we seek the Lord in prayer by reading Sacred Scripture; we serve by giving alms; and we practice self-control through fasting. We are called not only to abstain from luxuries during Lent, but to a true inner conversion of heart as we seek to follow Christ's will more faithfully. We recall the waters of baptism in which we were also baptized into Christ's death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ. 

Many know of the tradition of abstaining from meat on Fridays during Lent, but we are also called to practice self-discipline and fast in other ways throughout the season. Contemplate the meaning and origins of the Lenten fasting tradition in this reflection. In addition, the giving of alms is one way to share God's gifts—not only through the distribution of money, but through the sharing of our time and talents. As St. John Chrysostom reminds us: "Not to enable the poor to share in our goods is to steal from them and deprive them of life. The goods we possess are not ours, but theirs." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2446).

In Lent, the baptized are called to renew their baptismal commitment as others prepare to be baptized through the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a period of learning and discernment for individuals who have declared their desire to become Catholics.

¿Qué es la Cuaresma?

La Cuaresma es una temporada de 40 días de oración, ayuno y limosna que comienza el Miércoles de Ceniza y termina al atardecer del Jueves Santo. Es un período de preparación para celebrar la Resurrección del Señor en la Pascua. Durante la Cuaresma, buscamos al Señor en oración leyendo la Sagrada Escritura; servimos dando limosna; y practicamos el autocontrol a través del ayuno. Estamos llamados no solo a abstenernos de los lujos durante la Cuaresma, sino a una verdadera conversión interior del corazón mientras buscamos seguir más fielmente la voluntad de Cristo. Recordamos las aguas del bautismo en las que también fuimos bautizados en la muerte de Cristo, morimos al pecado y al mal, y comenzamos una nueva vida en Cristo.

Muchos conocen la tradición de abstenerse de comer carne los viernes durante la Cuaresma, pero también estamos llamados a practicar la autodisciplina y el ayuno de otras maneras a lo largo de la temporada. Contemple el significado y los orígenes de la tradición del ayuno cuaresmal en esta reflexión. Además, la limosna es una forma de compartir los dones de Dios, no solo a través de la distribución de dinero, sino también compartiendo nuestro tiempo y talentos. Como nos recuerda San Juan Crisóstomo: "No permitir que los pobres compartan nuestros bienes es robarles y privarles de la vida. Los bienes que poseemos no son nuestros, sino de ellos." (Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica, no. 2446).

Durante la Cuaresma, los bautizados están llamados a renovar su compromiso bautismal, mientras que otros se preparan para ser bautizados a través del Rito de Iniciación Cristiana de Adultos, un período de aprendizaje y discernimiento para las personas que han declarado su deseo de convertirse en católicos.

Stations of the Cross - La Villa

Every Friday during Lent, we will pray the Stations of the Cross at 6:00 p.m. as we walk through the streets of various neighborhoods in La Villa. This week, we will begin at the home of Iris Hinojosa, located at 201 N Laurel, La Villa, TX. We invite you to join us in this meaningful time of prayer and reflection on the passion and death of Jesus Christ.

Young Adult Gathering

All young adults 18 to 30 are invited to join our young adult ministry. We meet on the first and third Sunday's of the month from 5pm—7pm at the parish hall in Edcouch.  Join us for an evening of fun and faith sharing.
